Molecular Specifications
Melanotan II (MT-II) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) developed at the University of Arizona. As a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist with affinity for MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R, MT-II has been widely used in basic research to study the melanocortin receptor system across its full expression pattern. The D-Phe substitution at position 7 dramatically increases potency and receptor residence time relative to the linear α-MSH parent peptide.
Melanocortin Receptor Biology
MC1R: Expressed in melanocytes. Regulates pigmentation — driving eumelanin (brown/black) vs. pheomelanin (yellow/red) production. Key research receptor for UV response, tanning biology, and skin cancer risk pathway research.
