Epitalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) is a synthetic tetrapeptide developed by Dr. Vladimir Khavinson and the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology as a synthetic analog of epithalamin — a polypeptide extract from the bovine pineal gland. Epitalon has been studied in longevity biology and aging research for over 30 years, with the primary published research focusing on telomerase activation, telomere dynamics, and pineal gland biology.
Telomere Biology and Telomerase Research
Telomeres are repetitive hexanucleotide sequences (TTAGGG) protecting chromosome ends from degradation. Telomere length shortens with each somatic cell division, and telomere attrition is recognized as a hallmark of cellular aging. Telomerase (TERT + TERC) elongates telomeres but is active primarily in germ cells and stem cells — largely silenced in differentiated somatic cells.
The seminal Khavinson et al. 2003 study demonstrated that epitalon exposure increased telomerase activity in human fetal fibroblast cell cultures and extended the cells' proliferative capacity — the anchor finding of epitalon's longevity research interest.
